News from Hot Summer Lights, in the near lands of the Shire of Druim Doineann

The following emails have been edited and reformatted for the web.

THL Caius Foxcotte writes:

Dragons Laire was well represented on the battlefield at Hot Summer Lights.

The day opened with a rapier tournament to determine the rapier champion of Drium Doineann.  There were four competitors.  Kate, cadet to Monsiour Sebastion, Morigam Graham, Ambrose, and myself, cadet to Monsiour Talen.  After a round robin, best 2 out of 3 format, Ambrose emerged with no losses.  He not only took home the Championship, but gave his war point to Dragons Laire.

The heavy war took place at noon (SCA time noon, so we started at 1).  Our Warlord, Junkin, lead the Dragons Laire troops against Ivan and his Druim Doineann men.  Sir Alexi brought help from Bloth-a-nor to Drium Doineann's aid, but the vast number of Dragons Laire troops laid waste to the outnumbered men.

With Their Excellencies permission, a group of soldiers switched sides, to make the contest more fair, and fun.  Out of the 5 scenarios, Dragons Laire took 4.  Druim Doineann's only victory coming in large part from the rain of rocks and maces distributed by the young populace in that scenario.

The evening brought the unbelted heavy tourney.  To enter, a fighter must be unbelted, have never won a tourney, and have less than 5 years experience.  Dragons Lair was well represented by Myrick, Caedmon, Patrick the Fool, David (sorry I forgot your SCA name), Dylan, Pendaras, Morgan, Ambrose, and myself.  I apologize if I forgot someone.  There were 14 fighters in all.  Sarpiden fought the dreaded bye.  The tournament began with each fighter challenging Sarpinden.  Sarpinden never fell.  After that, a double elimination tourney was held.  In the finals were Pendaras and Morgan.  Morgan was the victor, as he was the first to win two fights in a row.  His prize is a custom fit helmet by Ivan.  Pendaras will be receiving a custom fit demi-gauntlet with his device from Althon.

The Chivalry prize was voted on by the fighters, and Caedmon was the recipient.  He too will receive a custom fit demi-gauntlet with his device from Althon.

Brian of Cardiff won Dium Doineann's archery championship.  Sorry I do not have more details of this event.

Give your warriors a pat on the back for representing the Barony so well.  But pat gently, as many of us are nursing our bruises.

From the Baron and Baroness:

Her Excellency and I wish to thank all who made the pilgrimage to Hot Summer Lights in Druim Doineann this weekend. Dragon’s Laire was WELL REPRESENTED in the sheer numbers of the Baronial Populace who attended. Her Excellency and I watched the entirety of the War and were impressed at the deeds we witnessed, and quite proud of what was accomplished.

THL Althon of Druim Doineann did a good job of putting together the scenarios and shepherding them. I really enjoyed watching the war. It was well fought, fun and exciting.

Many thanks to THL Caius for the above post as I really wished we could have stayed for the Unbelted Tournament. We’ve heard several reports of how chivalric and exciting it was. I know we say this a great deal, but it is important to remember that those who perform deeds of chivalry and glory bring honour not only to themselves but to the Barony that is their home. With what the warriors of Dragon’s Laire are accomplishing these days, Dragon’s Laire is becoming the envy of Their Majesty’s Kingdom. :-)

The Populace of Dragon’s Laire was everywhere yesterday and I would really like to hear more tales of what was accomplished.

On the archery range I saw THL Alaricus and THL Kassandra was busy in support. Actually on the range were Brian of Cardiff and Ehrig, who looked like he was having a good time.

I heard THL Ian on several occasions as he heralded the event. Thanks Ian!

Heard reports that the Siege Cooking was well fought also. :-) I heard much on it from Jess, Aileen and Marion.

A couple of quick thank-yous while I’m thinking about it. Thank you to THL Jahnkin, Lady Adelheidi, Lady Alieen, Myrick, and Marion for setting up the Baronial Pavilion for the day. Her Excellency and sincerely appreciated its presence. Many thanks also to Jahnkin and Adelheidi for making sure it was transported to and from HSL.

Many thanks also to Tsuruko Sensei and THL Madrun for attending to Her Excellency and I for the day. Our retinue is hard working and we certainly appreciate their efforts at taking care of us. :-)

Hot Summer Lights was fun and exciting. Thank you all for making it so. :-)

From THL Alaricus

The archery range was set up on Friday evening. Saturday at 10:30 am we had 8 archers shooting a York round. The sky was bright blue and it was a warm morning. Shooting 144 arrows down range 6 at a time walking 2.5 miles for 3.5 hours of constant shooting and walking to retrieve arrows.

Wulfwin
Alaricus (DL
) Dearbhail
Tom (from Kingston) (DL)
Thomas
Ehrig (shooting his first York) (DL)
Brian of Cardiff (DL)

They all seemed to enjoy the shoot. Several with soar fingers.

In the afternoon was the Mary Webb Memorial Archery Championship. The finalists were Tom and Brian.

Congratulations to Brian of Cardiff as the new shire archery champion. He was called up in Closing comments and received regalia for the year. He in turn needs to put one of his arrows in the quiver to add to the others already there.

Several archers got up on Sunday and shot a Royal round. Then time to pack and go home.

From Jess of the Roving Irishmen

I would like to add that Patrick the Fool won the Sheep War for the barony.  Overnight he amassed a herd of 15 sheep.  One of the first of his flock was taken from The Keep within minutes of the start of the war and while wearing bells!

From Lady Aileen of Dragonslaire:

So you are standing up at court waiting to announce the winner and you have so many people to thank and who was involved....and then you forget...so here's what I wanted to say at HSL!!!

It was a fierce battle, with the secret ingredients being rabbitt, mint, oats, blueberries and asparagus.  Using campfires, dutch ovens and camp stoves the teams all made some great dishes.  Thank you to all the teams who participated in the siege cooking contest:

Drum Doineann Social Club
House ID (DD)
Lady Elen (DL)
Dongea (DL)
Kayla and Michelle (DD)
House Llyra Tor 1
House Llyra Tor 2

It was a close race with mere points separating all the teams, but in the end, m'lady Riley, m'lady Hailey, m'lady Edya and m'lady Selina from House Llyra Tor 2 won the competition with a war point going to Drum Doineann.

It was great fun and I for one can't wait till next year!!!!

Did you know?

There are more letters about activities at various past events on the letters page of the Coronets.

Did you know?

There is usually a formal, or rarely an informal, Baronial encampment at each major camping event.
