Anne Brynley

Anne Brynley (© Jodie Emmons)

My life began in Ireland in 1398. I was the daughter of a seamstress and lived in Dublin. My home was quaint and I had three brothers and a sister. Being the eldest, I needed to help earn money for the family. My father was a fisherman and he often would leave home and be gone for long periods of time. My mother and I were often alone with my siblings but we managed. One day my father came home from one of his trips and he had news of a huge battle that had happened in France. It was the great Battle of Agincourt and the English had defeated the French under the leadership of King Henry V. Great tales continued to be told and one day I decided to leave my home in Ireland and cross the sea to England. I had friends who were living in London and I decided to go visit them and explore London. I knew I could find work there. London was much different than my home in Dublin but I quickly got used to the changes. One night, I was dining with friends and spotted a gentleman who kept looking at me. I glanced at him and our eyes connected. He smiled, excused himself from his friends and sauntered towards me. He introduced himself as Oliver Tarney, a member of the King’s Army. I was smitten immediately and within a year, we had married and lived quite comfortably in London with our two daughters. My family occasionally visited and I sometimes returned to Ireland. On one trip, I met an interesting fellow on the boat ride. He was a trader from the Middle East. He showed me some of the beautiful silks and garments he had for sale. I was able to purchase a few outfits and occasionally will dress up in this foreign attire. It is fun to wear although nothing like my usual English attire.

Interests: I'm a scribe who enjoys painting backlogged award scrolls and enjoys doing calligraphy. I also enjoy sewing and have over 50 years of sewing experience. I also enjoy doing machine embroidery and digitize my own designs.

Gwen the Potter

Gwen the Potter is a Welsh/English lady from the early 14th century. She lives in the outskirts of London, during the reign of Edward III, during the Hundred Years War. She escaped the Black Death by living outside of London in the countryside.

Dame Gwen the Potter (© Wendy McComb)

Gwen, as seen by her name, is a potter. Her proper name, Gwenllyen, is Welsh. Potter is derived from her profession. She was a member of a pottery guild, having learned the skill from her father. Both of her parents are deceased. She is married, but her husband is in France fighting in the war. She has a daughter that assists her. With the husband away, she is used to the unusual role of keeping her own household in order and making a living for her family.

Her device is a representation of her profession. Also, it is a representation of Gwen's modern business name, Dragon Fire Pottery. Her device can be found in the device folios, here.

In the middle ages, it is very unlikely that a potter would achieve the title of “Dame”, which Gwen received when she was honored with membership into the Order of the Laurel, the peerage for the Arts in the SCA.
