Baronial Marshal: HE Cedric Wlfraven

What started in a backyard party with motorcycle helmets for helms and garbage can lids for shields has evolved into a wide variety and complexity of martial pursuits representing combat styles of the Middle Ages. All activities are subject to strict safety guidelines. It is the Marshall's primary duty to enforce these standards for the safety of both the fighters and the spectators. Therefore while bruises are common and even proudly displayed, serious injuries remain rare.

Persona development in the SCA concentrates on the noble classes. Members of this class (sometimes called the knightly classes) were responsible for the protection of their own lands and people from bandits and outside aggressors. The noble class usually owed military support to an overlord or other allies. This focus has made the martial arts perhaps the most visible part of our organization.

Autumn War

This last weekend we saw many warriors test their might on the field of battle at Autumn War.

The fighting began Friday night with a rapier plank tourney within the camp of Clan Carn.  The participants found themselves in a round robin tournament, with the gallery choosing their off hand weapons, as the battle was to be fought on 9 ½” wide board over shark infested waters.  Shorn participated in his first competition, and had by far the best death.  In the end, Caius won the tournament.  Shorn and Caius even entertained the gallery with an energetic round of Baby Shark.

As the rapier tourney was ending, the Order of the Shattered Lance hosted their annual torchlight tournament.  Honor and chivalry were abundant as fighters selected a member of the Order, and the style in which they would fight.  This went on for hours, until the torches began to fade.

Saturday morning began with news of the forces of Clan Carn, St. Ulrich, and Black Company taking up arms against Blatha An Oir.  The Baronies of Glymere Meer, Stromgard, and our very own Dragon’s Laire jumped to the aid of their cousins.  Thus the armies of the King’s Men were formed.  The war unit of Dragon’s Laire was bolstered by the Myrmidons, Druim Doineann and the household of Dragon Draughten. The first battle was on the open field to test each army’s might to see if the forces were balanced.  Dragon’s Laire forces, lead by our Warload Junkin, were sent in as the head of the wedge on a charge straight through the heart of Clan Carn.  The casualties were heavy, but so were our enemy’s.  In the end, the King’ Men fell, but no changes were made to the sides.

The first heavy scenario was fought in three parts.  The first was the open field battle.  The looser of the open field would defend the bridge.  If the defenders won, the open field battle would be fought again.  If the attackers won, the defenders would move to defend their own castle.  If the defenders won the castle battle, the open field battle would be fought again, if the attackers won, the war point would be awarded.  The King’s men fought hard, but fell three strait times to the mercenaries, lost the first war point.

The second scenario was a game of capture the flag with unlimited resurrections.  The first team to capture the flag two times would be the victor.  Both teams had a castle to defend their flag.  The Kings men showed no mercy and quickly pinned their enemies in their castle.  With ingenuity on their side, our warriors built a ramp of hay bales to scale the walls.  The King’s Men claimed the mercenary’s flag twice and took the second war point.

The rapier fighters fought four scenarios, with each one representing a war point.  Shorn, now with a tournament under his belt, took on the leadership roll, and lead the King’s Men to four victories.

Sunday morning brought the five man tournament.  Team Dragon’s Laire was made up of Conchobar (Conner), Caius, Pendarus, Achmed of Druim Doineann, and Nels of Blatha An Oir.  There were five teams, and they fought in a round robin style tournament.  Dragon’s Laire only lost once, and made it to the finals.  There they lost, but fought well to represent their Barony.

Huzzah to the fighters!
