Welcome

We would like to cordially invite you to a Culinary Symposium for those with any interest in historical food. There will be everything from hands on cooking over fire, feast planning and preparation, to research presentations. This event will be held in An Tir, in the Barony of Dragon's Laire (Belfair, Washington) the weekend of November 14-16, 2008.

There are still plenty of day trip spaces available, a few sleeping spaces have recently opened up, and there is still room in some amazing classes! There are 9 tracks of classes all together, and all of them packed with historical cooking fun!
There is an entire track of historical Norse cooking,  a half track of Gaelic foods, and a half track on middle eastern foods. Want to hear historical food lectures that have been presented at Oxford,  Petits Propos Cuinarires, & the Renaissance Society of America? This is the symposium for you!

Directions to siteVia Tacoma Narrows Bridge: Take I-5 south to Tacoma; take Hwy 16 (exit #132) west to Bremerton.  Take left lane exit onto Hwy 3 (to Belfair) about 3 miles before Bremerton; take Hwy 3 to Belfair.  OR  Make your best way to Belfair.

From Belfair: Turn West (from Bremerton this is a right turn; from Shelton it is a left turn) onto Hwy 300 (towards Belfair State Park, which is located 3 miles down the road) at the traffic light (corner) by the Safeway store lot, and then drive one half mile past Belfair State Park. Turn right onto NE Belfair-Tahuya Rd & drive approximately 4.0 miles and turn right onto Haven Way (be prepared for a temporary one-lane bridge at the 3.5 mile location which has a traffic light; you will bear right after the bridge to continue to the 4.0 mile mark). Drive on Haven Way for 0.8 miles and turn right onto unmarked Bennettsen Lake Rd. at the Camp Lyle McLeod sign (There's a blue gate just into the dirt road which is not locked, and you may leave open if it is closed). Follow Bennettsen Lake Rd to the end (2 miles) and turn right onto unmarked Twin Lakes Rd; follow for one half mile to the camp entrance on the right. The camp gate is left wide open on Friday evenings, Sundays, and summer check-in & out days, but closed & not locked most of the rest of the time. Accomodations

The site is a campground with sleeping accommodations available. There are 92 spots total, 62 are heated, 30 are in unheated yurts.

Spaces will be assigned first come, first served with the heated spaces going first (unless someone specifically requests a yurt). All you need to bring is yourself, feast gear, and bedding.

Here are some images of the site (including one of the yurts).

If you are coming from out of kingdom you can make advanced arrangements if you are unable to bring your own bedding. With advanced noticed we will also be able to supply some cooking equipment and supplies for those coming from out of area to teach.

This is a girl scout camp, so it's a bone dry site (no alcohol at all, not even for cooking). We are looking into whether brewing and vinting might be allowed as it wouldn't be alcoholic at that point.

In addition, the Belfair Motel has lodging available.

There is also a year-round RV Park located at Belfair State Park, located approximately 10-15 minutes from the Culinary Symposium site location.
