A Barony in the Kingdom of An Tir which is
a Part of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA, Inc)
The following emails have been edited and reformatted for the web.
As is usual after large events in An Tir at which Dragon's Laire made its presence felt, we wanted to send out a missive recognizing those who participated in making Ursulmas the spectacular event it was. Our journey and attendance on site was made easier, more joyful, and more epic by the actions of many. Thank you to all who enhanced the word fame of the Barony at Ursulmas! Please! If anyone who participated is overlooked, let us know so that they may be added to the Roll of Heroes in attendance at Ursalmas, 2012.
As usual, we need to thank the Retinue who attended us for the event. In this case, Tsuruko Sensei and THL Madrun. They met us at our home early in the morning and stayed with us the entirety of the day, providing assistance in all manner of efforts, on a moment's notice and without second thought. Everything from helping set up our area to recording notes for us during the course of the day so that we would not forget important commitments and promises we made.
Although Dame Gwenllyn Potter, our other core Retinue, could not attend, we are in her debt for ensuring that space was reserved for us beside the Ursulmas Erics. Thank you, Dame Gwen! Thanks also to THL Kassandra, THL Morrigan Graham, and M'Lord Emil for helping reserve the space for us on Friday night.
When we arrived on site, an entire group of Baronial members descended upon us to help unload the chariot and set up the area. There was a blur of people, so I'm sure that I don't have them all here. I do remember Master Cedric Wlfraven, THL Ronan MacCormac, THL Caius Foxcotte, THL Nidda Ridarelli, THL Eileen Nic Domnial and Lady Adelheidi Leeuin all lent a hand. Carpet was dropped and the banner was flying in the hall in no time at all.
Later in the morning, M'Lady Inga provided her support in tasks over the course of the day, as did THL Eilidh Keldeleth. Even small tasks are greatly appreciated and not taken lightly.
We immediately located our Baronial participants in the various Martiallate Tournaments happening around Ursulmas. As is our tradition, we felt it important to personally thank the participants as well as give them tokens of acknowledgement. In this case a tassel made by the hands of Her Excellency Laurellen.
In the Heavy Combat Tournament, we located Master Andras, who was actively being inspired by His Lady, THL Leisl von Katzenheim. In addition, THL Jahnkin de Leeuw, THL Morrigan Graham, and Lord Matthew (of Druim Doineann) took part in the Tournament. Later in the day, THL Conchobar MacEoin donned his armor and participated as well. We also have adopted Sir Rauokinn as a family member of the Barony and wished her success as well as a token of good fortune as well.
In the Rapier Tournament, we witnessed THL Caius, M'Lord Sorenn (sp?) and M'Lord Ambrose. M'Lord Ambrose fought all the way through to the Semi-Finals; which, considering the talented field of competitors present, was a major achievement. Congratulations, Ambrose!
In the Archery Tournament, THL Brian of Cardiff was given a token from the hand of Her Excellency for taking part. Later in the day, I witnessed THL Loric mac Lochlainn also on the archery range. I believe that THL Arion the Wanderer also took part at some point as he spent some time there as well (Thrown Weapons Tournament, perhaps?).
No combat can happen without the sacrifice of time by volunteers. In the Heavy Combat Tournament, Master Cedric Wlfraven lent his considerable talent to being a marshall upon the field. Mistress Althaia filia Lazari was also present everywhere in the running of the Tournament. THL Nidda Ridarelli volunteered some time at the Lists Table. The List Mistress of Aquaterra was nearly overrun by the sheer numbers of fighters who wanted to participate in the first fighting event of the season.
Speaking of volunteers to the event, we witnessed M'Lady Diane of Kent and her lord, Stephen, providing many hours of service on gate. M'Lord Emil also spent a number of hours providing gate service. This is a tedious job, but a very important one to any event. Thank you to those who volunteered the hours.
Later in the day we formally invited Their Majesties to attend June Faire, with an invitation that was painted and hand calligraphed by THL Renart the Fox. Their Majesties accepted the invitation handily. Huzzah! THL Renart joined Dame Tamlyn of Wyntersea at the Scribal Table and demonstrated the Scribal Arts to many who eagerly asked questions.
Also in the Arts and Sciences display area were THL Kassandra, who demonstrated her bobbin lace; and THL Arion the Wanderer, who demonstrated for the Moniers' Guild. The demonstration of the Arts and Sciences is important as an inspiration to others, as well as a good introduction to what the SCA is to the Modern Public in attendance.
The St. Ursul Arts and Sciences competition is run every year to three levels: beginner, intermediate and advance. THL Kassandra won first place in the advanced category, for which she won a wooden chair and a scroll.
The Barony of Aquaterra runs a contest of a 'Best Dressed Bear' every year at Ursulmas. A member of the Dragon's Laire Populace won this year, M'Lady Marguerite des Laines Noire (of Kingston, I believe) won the award this year, the prize being a bag of fabric and a scroll.
In service to Their Majesties Ieuan and Gwyneth was Dame Brighid, who acted as Their Head of Retinue for the weekend. As usual, Dragon's Laire volunteerism could be seen in every faucet of the event! :-)
Another member of the Baronial Populace, Dame Eleanor of Leycestershyre, formally took responsibility for three new apprentices. They will learn much, as well as gain a wonderful new friendship. We wish them well in their journey of apprenticeship.
During the site tear-down on Sunday, Dragon's Laire also lent a hand to Aquaterra. THL Kassandra, Diane of Kent and M'Lord Stephan all stayed until the end to pull down the infrasture so that all could go home at a decent hour. For providing so much support to Aquaterra, M'Lord Stephen was given a second Baronial Coin of Aquaterra in recognition.
With so many of the Dragon's Laire Populace in attendance at Ursulmas, it almost felt like a Dragon's Laire event. :-) The many hours of service and support provided by our members was greatly appreciated by our brethren in Aquaterra. Many, many thanks to all of you for this support.
You are what makes the Society for Creative Anachronism the special place it is. As well as the people who make our home as MIGHTY as it is. We personally thank you for that support, it is greatly appreciated.
HUZZAH UNTO THE MIGHT BARONY OF DRAGON'S LAIRE!!!! Long may it be the shining jewel of the Crown of An Tir!

As we usually do, Her Excellency and I wanted to send out a list of names to recognize all those from Dragon’s Laire who provided service and support to the Kingdom of An Tir and the Barony of Dragon’s Laire at Twelfth Night. We normally also list awards given during these Kingdom Courts. Master Ralg kindly listed most of them last night, but since then we’ve come to an understanding that our list was incomplete by a handful of names. We’re going to get clarification and ensure we post a complete list of awards and recipients from Twelfth Night as soon as it becomes available. The Barony of Dragon’s Laire was recognized in a big way at Twelfth Night, yet another indication of just how much of an impact we have upon the Kingdom as a whole.
There is one award and recipient I will mention here though (who has already been mentioned), Arion the Wanderer. It was a true moment of joy for us as Baron and Baroness to witness King Thorin and Queen Dagmaer offer Arion admittance into the Order of the Laurel. We had only to look at the coins he created and struck in our honor to know of his brilliance as an artist, and we had only to speak to him to know that his bearing and personality is Peer-like in all that he is and does. The offer made this weekend only put into words and deed something we’ve known for a long while now. Congratulations Arion!
Of course, no Peer is complete without his or her inspiration. Arion’s Lady, Skadi of Three Trees, was present when Arion was offered admittance and it was plain to all the joy she had in the offer that was made. Thank you, Skadi, for the inspiration you have given to Arion in his journey to Peerage.
As usual, many good gentles from Dragon’s Laire provided service and assistance to us throughout the weekend at Twelfth Night. Our ever faithful retinue was in full force and looked out for our every need. We are incredibly grateful to them. Thank you Dame Gwenllyn Potter, Tsuruko Sensei, and Your Ladyship Madrun for your tireless service to us over the weekend. As well as the company you gave on the long drive to and from the event!
Dame Gwenllyn and Tsuruko Sensei also managed to squeeze in enough time to provide judging support to the Arts and Sciences displays and competition at Twelfth Night.
M’Lady Inga of Dragon’s Laire also provided us a goodly amount of direct service over the weekend, everything from running errands, fetching materials for us, even reserving and guarding space for us in Court. To some this might seem like menial or small service, but to us it is sincerely appreciated as it made our Twelfth Night experience even that much better. Thank you, Inga!!!
THL Angharad Albanes also played errand runner for us a couple of times over the weekend. This in additional to her duties to Their Majesties Thorin and Dagmaer. THL Angharad often is overlooked as much of her service is in the background. It is often not flashy or boisterous, but just as important to both Crown and Coronet. Thank you for everything, Angharad!
We saw a number of Dragon’s Laire’s Populace providing service to Their Majiesties, both to TRM Thorin and Dagmaer and to TRM Ieuan and Gwyneth. Behind the Thrones I witnessed Her Excellency Brighid, Monsignor Talentus, THL Jenae, Lady Magdalena, Lord Albrecht, THL Caius, and THL Nidda. I believe also that THL Arion the Wanderer provided his services as a guard.
Master Cedric, as usual, was in many places. All seemingly at once! :-) I know he provided all manner of service to both Their Royal Majesties and Their Royal Highnesses, and probably many others as well. Master Cedric has always been an inspiration to me. Thank you, Cedric!
Boris and Greta, adopted members of the Barony, were also in attendance and provided whatever services they could offer to Her Excellency Brighid.
A number of moments during Court were memorable to me. Her Excellency Melissa, daughter of Her Excellency Amanda Kendal, offered a formal Toast of Remembrance in Court to all those who have departed these mortal lands. It was very moving.
I also saw a number of scrolls done by members of the Barony. Dame Tamlyn produced a beautiful scroll to honor Dame Gwenllyn’s Court Barony recognition. I think a number of other scrolls were also completed by her and THL Renart the Fox (although I never had the chance to check for sure :-)).
We also spent time with THL Jahnkin and Lady Adelheidi, who made it on to site late into the night on Friday. THL Jahnkin was busy with his duties as Kingdom Chirurgeon. Thankfully, his professional services were not needed. But I did see him proving his dedication to the cause by holding his Kingdom Chirurgeon’s meeting at 8PM on Saturday night.
All three members of the Populace mentioned last week participated in the Kingdom Rapier Championship. THL Caius was inspired by his Lady Nidda. THL Morrigan Graham was inspired by THL Moriah MacLochlann Redstone Graham. Lord Albrecht was inspired by Lady Magdalena of Dragon’s Laire. No one from Dragon’s Laire was named as the Kingdom Rapier Champion, but all provided honor to themselves and the Barony by fighting well in the Tournament. We thank all of you for participating.
In service to the Kingdom and the Rapier Championship were other members of Dragon’s Laire. Monsignor Talentus provided his service as a Marshall for the Tournament. THL Jenae, as the Kingdom Mistress of the Lists, provided her services to the event itself. Thank you both for all of your efforts.
Even though we did not attend Curia on Sunday, we were present for the Finance Committee meeting where July Coronation was awarded to The Barony of Three Mountains. It will take place at Trojan Park, near Rainier, Oregon. For 2012, May Crown will be hosted by Dregate (a new site has been designated, a Fairgrounds facility I believe). September Crown will be hosted by Dragon’s Laire. Twelfth Night, 2013, will be hosted by Three Mountains in downtown Portland.
That’s all I can remember at the moment. As mentioned, the complete list of awards given at Twelfth Night will be issued to the e-list as soon as it has been compiled. If there are items in this missive that should be clarified or added, please let us know.
Vivat! Dragon’s Laire!

There was a lot of excitement surely in the naming of the new members of the Order of the Pelican at the Emprise this day. But another item I wanted to make sure to mention were the results of the Equestrian Championship of the Emprise.
Her Grace Miranda, former Equestrian Champion of Dragon’s Laire, won the Championship this day. But only one point separated her from the second place finisher, The Honourable Lord Ivan Leskov, Seneschal of the Shire of Druim Doineann. I wish I could remember the names of the horses they rode. But alas, I cannot. Congratulations to them both!
If you ever get the chance to sit down and talk with His Lordship Ivan about horsemanship, take the opportunity. It was fascinating to hear from him the training involved and how the horse and rider attune themselves to each other. I can almost guarantee that he’ll be Kingdom Equestrian Champion someday soon. :-)

I was reminded of the names for THL Ivan’s horses, Taz and Millie. Ivan and Taz were the ones entering this weekend. Which is important as Ivan reminded me at the Emprise that it is not the rider who is named Champion, it is the TEAM of the horse and rider. Nothing could be won if they did not work well together.
Congratulations unto THL Ivan and Taz. :-)

Her Excellency and I have much for which to be proud and thankful after a long September Crown weekend witnessing the deeds of prowess and service performed by the magnificent Populace of the Barony of Dragon’s Laire.
I fully hope and encourage you all to expand on anything said in the below missive, especially for any items Her Excellency and I may have forgotten along the way. It was a busy weekend. :-) Her Excellency herself may interject after reading this and add more to the story.
On Friday, when Her Excellency and I arrived on site we were greeted with a Baronial encampment already organized by Lord Myrick from the plan arranged for by THL Mateusz. He had assistance from others, but I am especially grateful for him taking on the responsibility of making sure the encampment was laid out so that it could be enjoyed by all. As the weekend progressed, Lady Aileen (with the help of Lady Adelheidi, Lady Jess, M'Lady Marion and others) truly made it a home by adding fencing and dagging to the edges of the encampment. Not only did it define our boundaries, it added to the sense of community. I thought it looked great and am looking forward to what Lady Aileen and her Team does for the future Dragon’s Laire encampments!
It didn’t take long for us to also learn the members of the Baronial Populace had arrived on site much earlier and were helpful in the set up of the site itself. THL Kassandra was part of that crew, but I’m thinking there were others as well. Let us know who you were.
After Her Excellency and I had set up our pavilion it was time for the Baronial Pavilion on the Erics. THL Renart took time away from dinner preparations to help me get the pavilion set up. Thanks, Renart! On the Erics themselves we were met by THL Brummbar and Dame Gwenllyn, and later by THL Aelianora. They were in the process of setting up her pavilion next to the Baronial, but they also took the time to help raise the pavilion and it was greatly appreciated.
Many thanks to THL Renart for transporting the Baronial Brazier to site. It is a beast, but I really like having it for gatherings. :-)
The next morning Her Excellency and I hurried to the Erics to meet the Cadet Tourney already in progress. We gave out tokens to THL Caius and to Soren, who were fighting in the Tourney. Both seemed to by having a good time. In that same Tourney we saw Don Talon all over the place, providing the benefit of his talents. We also saw Lord Morrigan Graham marshalling. So Dragon’s Laire was well represented in rapier combat.
Later in the morning we ran over to the archery field where we found THL Alaricus and THL Arion ready to take the field for the Kingdom Protector Tournament. THL Loric provided support to the Tournament itself. Neither Alaricus nor Arion were named as Kingdom Protector, but they both represented the Barony well.
For most of all the time we were on site, we had a dedicated retinue alongside us. Lady Adena was present much of the time, as was THL Madrun. M'Lady Marion traveled with us for a while. But I know of several others whose names escape me at the moment. Please remind us of who you were. Thank you to all who provided that service for Her Excellency and myself. It was greatly appreciated.
Next to the archery fields were the Equestrian Fields. We met THL Ivan, the redoubtable Seneschal of Druim Doineann, as he was about to ride his horse into combat for the Equestrian Championship. He showed us the new barding he had made and spoke of his preparations. The Shire of Druim Doineann should be proud of his presence in the Tournament. His bearing and manner truly exemplified the chivalry and grace associated with those who pursue the equestrian arts. His horse (whose name escapes me at the moment) was very well-mannered and friendly, certainly another tribute to His Lordship Ivan's skill at horsemanship.
Her Grace Miranda was eventually named as the Kingdom Equestrian Champion, and I'm very happy for her as she has been a staunch support for Dragon's Laire, but we cheered on His Lordship Ivan as best we could. My hope is to be present the day he eventually gains that title.
The Crown Lists were a little smaller this year (64 I believe), but Dragon's Laire had at least three participants! Master Cedric (who made a GRAND entrance introducing himself and his inspiration, Dame Brighid), THL Jahnkin, and THL Mathias, who is starting to play again after spending some time away from the SCA. It was good to see Dragon's Laire represented so well on the Fields of Chivalry. From the reports I heard, they fought well. But I haven't heard too many of the details. I hope we hear more.
THL Jenae, as the Kingdom Listmistress, had a large contingent of help. It is a mark of her talent that the day ended with everyone on her List Team being happy and excited to have been a part of the work. Great Job, Jenae!
We also want to thank all who processed with us into Court, and especially to THL Caius for providing his voice as our entrance. We looked pretty awesome as a Barony, I must say. :-)
When the Crown Prince was decided in final combat (being Crown Prince Ieuan Gower and Crown Princess Gwyneth Gower) Court was the focus of the remainder of the day. Dragon's Laire once again provided many of the support staff to Their Majesties. Not just for Court but throughout the weekend. Dame Brighid coordinated many of Their Courts. Master Cedric managed their encampment and provided services as needed. THL Nidda provided child support and other services. THL Angharad Albanes acted as Court Reporter among other things. I saw Lady Magdalena, Don Talon, THL Jenae, and THL Caius all hard at work providing a myriad of support functions. It was extremely gratifying to see Dragon's Laire so well represented in service to the Crown.
Later that evening we were actually approached by Demi-Lion, acting in the capacity of Black Lion Kingdom Principal Herald, and told of the services provided by THL Caius over the weekend to date. Not only did he cheerfully support any function asked of him, but he was a brilliant voice herald whenever it was needed. He spoke well and was easily heard. Demi-Lion was extremely impressed and wanted to ensure that Her Excellency and I knew of this. We were quite proud of the fact that THL Caius is our own Golden Dragon Persuivant. :-)
During Court, I do remember that THL Jahnkin was named as Kingdom Chirurgeon, and I believe he received his Jambe De Lion as well? Hopefully, someone will confirm that for me. It was also a glad thing to see Brian of Cardiff awarded a Goutte De Sang. He provides much quiet service to the Barony. It is the quiet people who are hardest to catch and recognize, but some of the most appreciated.
The next day started early with the Jarl Barak Memorial Tourney. Her Excellency and I missed paying our respects to those who fought from Dragon's Laire, but we honor their efforts none-the-less. I know that Master Andras and THL Conchobar both fought in the Tournament. We heard of their battles later, and even though they were not the victors of the Tournament they came away with increased skill and knowledge. Thank you both for participating.
Then it was time for the Squire's Tourney! I may need some help for this one. Her Excellency and I spoke and gave tokens to M'Lord Albrecht and Andronicles (sp?). Both were excited and from what we witnessed, put forth good efforts in their combat. I believe that Master Cedric and THL Jahnkin also took part in the Tournament, but I keep thinking that there was another person or two from the Barony who also took part?
For most of the rest of the day, Her Excellency and I attended many meetings. I can't think of much that was mentioned at them that will not be broadcast more completely by their respective representatives.
Later on Sunday was another Royal Court, where more of the Populace of Dragon's Laire were recognized for their efforts. M'Lady Jess Dunn of the Roving Irishmen and Myrick the Bear were both given their Award of Arms (AoA's). Another proud moment for the Barony! I also sincerely appreciated M'Lord Caedmon's enthusiastic shouts of 'DRAGON'S LAIRE' as the recipients made their way to the Thrones. :-) Thanks, Caedmon!!! :-)
I was also personally pleased to see Sir Richard given a Belated Rose by the Ladies of the Rose and Valorous Estate. His chivalry and courtesy is ever an inspiration to me personally. His support of Dragon's Laire over the years has always been appreciated and he serves as a good reminder of what makes the Society such a good place to be. :-)
Later that evening we all ended up in the Baronial Encampment for the evening's Bardic Circle. We didn't provide much competition to the Kingdom Bardic. But we had a great time none-the-less. :-) At the height of the fun we must have had somewhere close to twenty people around the fire pit. Thank you to all who participated and attended. Even if you just showed up to listen, it was still appreciated that you participated in helping to foster that community spirit that Her Excellency and I want to see happen.
Many Thanks also to Dame Gwenllyn the Potter for basically leading the singing! And providing the song books! Your efforts were greatly appreciated by Her Excellency and myself. It never mattered the protocol, or the actual songs we sang. We had SCA traditional alongside Muppets Treasure Island alongside the Timewarp from Rocky Horror. I laughed for a good long time. :-)
By the time Monday morning hit, I was tired! :-) But it was good to be a part of the Baronial Breakfast. Thank you Master Ralg for organizing it for us. And many thanks to all who participated and provided items for the meal. Even your companionship was sincerely appreciated.
After that it was time to pack up for home. Many thanks to THL Madrun for transporting material home for us. Many thanks also to Albrecht for taking the Baronial Brazier back home for us. It is a heavy thing, but like I said earlier it makes a great gathering point.
Many, many thanks to those who took down the Baronial Pavilion on the Erics. From what I understand it was Master Cedric, THL Caius, THL Nidda, Don Talon and THL Jenae. After tearing down our own encampment, it was supremely appreciated to only have to load up the pavilion into Heather for transport home.
It was a good weekend for the Barony of Dragon's Laire. We are one of the reasons that the Kingdom of An Tir is the strong and special place it is. We provide service to both its Crown and its Administration. We provide beauty in the form of largesse and goods. We provide friendship and support with our presence. The Kingdom would be a much poorer place without the Barony of Dragon's Laire. As Baron and Baroness we couldn't be prouder of such a group as this. Thank you very much for providing that sense of purpose and pride.
And as a reminder, I'm sure that I'm missing people and activities above. I would appreciate it if people would provide details. Tell us the stories of your weekend at September Crown. Her Excellency and I want to hear of your deeds of honour and service. It is a good way to keep our history and a good way to foster our sense of community.
Thank you!
Arontius and Laurellen.

Greetings!
Last Saturday I attended the Investiture of Prince Alden and Princess Lenora of Tir Righ. It was a very special feeling to see the Coronet of Tir Righ placed upon the brow of Princess Lenora. She has supported Dragon’s Laire for a number of years, especially at June Faire. The first year I headed the Planning Team for June Faire, in 1999, Lenora provided a kitchen for our Team the entire weekend. We ate well! She was so hard working, and yet so pleasant the entire time, we felt seriously spoiled as Team Haggis that year. It was good to be in attendance this weekend and witness someone that special being given the accolades she received.
But even in such a far away place it was with gratitude that I witnessed the populace of Dragon’s Laire hard at work in support of the Great Kingdom of An Tir:
Many thanks to THL Jahnkin and Lady Adelheidi for setting up a Baronial gathering point on the Erics of Investiture. I’m not sure, but I believe His Lordship fought in the Championship that day? Maybe he can be persuaded to give us details?
I do know for sure that Don Talon and THL Ronan both fought in the Rapier Tournament. I was unable to see the Tournament, and am also hoping they can let us know how it went.
My usual sentiment here – Any who compete and display bring honour not only to themselves but also to the Barony they represent, The Mighty Barony of Dragon’s Laire!!!
I also witnessed Master Cedric, Dame Brighid, THL Jenae, and Lady Magdalena all in support of Their Majesties as retinue for the day (along with Talon and Ronan).
Thank you all for continuing to bring pride to the Barony in the service you provide to Kingdom and Crown. It is appreciated by Her Excellency and myself.
And finally, but certainly not the leastest, many thanks to THL Madrun for being my retinue for the day. Your presence was a constant support. Thank You!!!!
Now it’s on to September Crown!!!!
Arontius.

Greetings All!
Her Excellency and I have emphasized since the Coronets were first placed on our brows that one of our biggest duties was to recognize the greatness that is the Populace of the Honourable Barony of Dragon’s Laire. Everywhere we have traveled we have witnessed great deeds of effort and heroism, all done in good humor and as needed whether the event was hosted by the Barony or not. Sport of Kings this last weekend was no exception. I had the great pleasure of attending the day on Saturday and just wanted to express my thankfulness for the deeds I witnessed that day.
Their Majesties were attended all day long by members of the Dragon’s Laire Populace. Dame Brighid coordinated many of the retinue duties and had the assistance and hard work of THL Jenae, THL Nidda, and Lady Magdalena. The Prince Royale, Niles, was well cared for during the day. The efforts of these ladies was epic, even as the heat and oppressive weather of the day was also epic. Great Work, Ladies!
Don Talon provided much physical assistance, as well as photography services. His good humor and good deeds are always appreciated!
As mentioned earlier, Master Cedric entered the Grand Tournament, attended to by his Man-At-Arms, Dylan. But I also witnessed Lord Morgan out in the Lists. The number of Dukes, Knights and other fighters of high experience was truly epic. Just entering the lists alone was a deed worthy of honour.
THL Renart worked all day long in the Virgin Countess Inn. Every time I walked by he was cooking or preparing food. An amazing amount of effort! It was also a great thing to have an opportunity to sit with his Lovely Wife, THL Aelianora, and discuss ideas on the upcoming Arts and Sciences / Bardic / Scholar Championships. She is an amazingly brilliant woman (but I’m biased as she is one of my protégé :-)).
I also saw M’Lord Albrecht in attendance, assisting as he could. He is one of those quiet, thoughtful, but ever present and truly helpful type of people.
Along with THL Caius. He learned much from the classes he attended and will be a force on the fields. Be warned! :-) From what I understand, he help was greatly appreciated in the set-up earlier.
Finally, many thanks and gratitude to THL Madrun who was my companion and retinue for the day (as well as driver). Her hard work and attendance was appreciated as always. :-)
I know that I’m overlooking several members of the Populace, but my brain is just not cooperating fully. :-) Please let us know if you took part at Sport of Kings and let us know what you did.
Many Thanks! Arontius
Baron, Dragon’s Laire.

Greetings All!
The Pageantry surrounding the Grand Tournament was something that was truly awe-inspiring. It is the pageantry displayed here that was one of the enchantments that first captured my attention in the SCA. When gathered, Master Cedric’s processional numbered at least twenty people. When we entered the field of honour before the judges, I myself escorted both Countess Morag, first Queen of An Tir, and Viscountess Liesl of the Summits. I was humbled myself to be in that Company alone. But all of us were there to support Master Cedric in his bid to gain honour and glory upon the fields of gold. We did not enter in relation to Order of Precedence, we entered as friends and family and witnesses to the deeds of chivalry about to be performed by Master Cedric.
After we had entered and gathered, Master Cedric spoke of those present, especially of the inspiration of his Lady Wife, Dame Brighid Ross. Then he spoke words of brotherhood with his fellow fighters upon the field with whom he was about to engage in battle. He spoke of how humbled and proud he was to be escorted by so many folks of good will and good friendship there to support him and his deeds.
All the words he spoke were done in the bold line of epic saga. Done loudly and with pride. But full of meaning and emotion because even though they were done to tell a tale, they were the truth of his heart. All who heard them were touched by the moment.
It was one of those occasions for which I was glad to be a witness to history. I was grateful to be present and humbled and awed by the thought that I was the Baron before such a shining example of a member of the Populace of Dragon’s Laire.
I thank Master Cedric most profusely for allowing me to be a part of something as magnificent as what I witnessed.

With my faithful retinue Patsy, er, I mean Mistress Gwen :-), we attended the Wyewood Revel this weekend and sat with His Majesty Thorin in Court as Membership in the Order of the Pelican was offered to THL Robert Trinite. Many thanks to Mistress Gwen for the help. It was appreciated.
However, upon arrival home Odin’a Ravens Huginn and Muninn (Thought and Memory) swooped in with news of victories attained by members of the Populace of Dragon’s Laire at the event of Stormgods in the Barony of Stromgard.
Monsignor Talentus again won a mighty victory in the Rapier Tournament. He is becoming (if he isn’t already) THE premier Master of Rapier in the Kingdom. I’m sure all who don the mask of rapier combat fear that quick blade of his.
And right behind him in skill is THL Caius, who won the Chivalry prize for the Rapier Tournament. This is no mean feat either as he faced some incredible competition against the flower of rapier talent for An Tir.
Other stories reached our ears of THL Nidda, who was apparently working hard as ground crew for Equestrian Activities and was actually seen on a horse this weekend. Perhaps an upcoming Equestrian Champion for the Barony? Her Excellency and myself would be incredibly proud to have an Equestrian Champion who actually resides in the Barony :-) (although, I do have to say I am incredibly grateful to anyone who is willing to put forth the effort to bring their horse to a Dragon’s Laire event and ride).
And finally, the most epics deeds of the day were apparently performed by His Excellency Cedric Wlfraven. Who was victorious all the way through to the final rounds of the Stormgods Championship Tournament. He faced some incredibly epic foes and stories will be told of his valor, his chivalry, his prowess, his strength, and his skill for years to come.
Congratulations to all who competed and won word-fame at Stormgods this last weekend. Thank you for representing the power and pride of the Barony and demonstrating exactly why we are... ’The Mighty Barony of Dragon’s Laire’.
Thank you, Arontius and Laurellen.

As is becoming something of a tradition for Her Excellency and myself, we wanted to send out a note of thank you and recognition to those of the Barony who attended and participated in July Coronation this last weekend. The presence of the Dragon’s Laire Populace always adds to the grandeur of any event, at least in my opinion. :-)
But first, an apology. Her Excellency and myself really missed actually being a part of the Populace in the Dragon’s Laire encampment. Being in the RV Ghetto was like being a whole time zone away. We missed everyone a lot. And between meetings and tournaments and all the other happenings Her Excellency and I were only able to make it over there a handful of times. Yes, we definitely missed you all. And definitely plan on camping with the rest of the Barony at September Crown.
Although it WAS indeed fun to teach ‘Baby Shark’ to a new crowd of people on Saturday night. :-)
Many Thanks to THL Madrun, THL Alaricus and THL Kassandra for helping set up the Marketplace on Friday. Everything went together quickly and efficiently. Alaricus aided quite a bit being the runner for the Merchants for a long while. All of your help was greatly appreciated.
Many thanks also to Master Ralg for setting up the Baronial Pavilion and laying out the RV area of July Coronation.
Her Excellency Brighid, His Excellency Cedric, THL Talon and THL Jenae worked hard all weekend as retinue for Their Majesties and Their Highnesses. I wish I had half their energy!
It was also a very proud moment seeing how THL Jenae pulled in several from Dragon’s Laire, including THL Nidda and Lady Magdalena, to help with lists during the Kingdom Champions Tourney.
I definitely saw Monsignor Talon and THL Caius participating in the Rapier Tourneys. I think that Albrecht also participated?
Over in the arts arena I saw that THL Kassandra put up a pretty outstanding display of her work. During the Artisans Meet-And-Greet, I saw THL Madrun again displaying her beautiful card-weaving. THL Rycheza was also showing off some of her foody artistry. I think that Dame Ellen and Tsuruko Sensei also lent their talents to the Arts and Sciences over the weekend.
The Dragon’s Laire encampment was a good place to be for food. Between Rycheza and THL Mateusz, Brenna and her daughter, it really smelled good over there.
Who did I miss in the Baronial Encampment? I saw THL Karl and his Lady (whose name is escaping my tired brain at the moment, my apologies :-)). I saw Dallas in that monster rope bed I sold him years ago. I’m impressed that he brought it and actually set it up. It is comfortable, but freakin’ heavy! :-)
And, of course, who can ever forget the household of ‘Fox and Squirrel’. :-) THL Renart, THL Aelianora, THL Oliver, THL Anne, and Lady Deirdre had a really good gathering going on Saturday. It was a lot of fun. :-)
On Sunday, Her Excellency and I were proud to add a favor to THL Jahnkin as he entered the lists for the Kingdom Heavy Championship. We were not able to stay through to the end of the Championship, but we are hoping for tales from the lists. How well did you do Jahnkin?
His Lady Inspiration, Lady Adelheidi, also was a hard worker over the weekend. Her Excellency and I appreciated her good humor and her willingness to not only wrangle the Baronial Encampment, but to help with any other tasks given her over the course of the weekend.
Before I forget, I definitely want to thank Master Cedric and Monsignor Talentus for helping us strike down the Baronial Pavilion and transporting it over to our RV. We were not sure how we were going to get this done ourselves with as boggy as the event site was, and their help was sincerely appreciated.
Did I miss anyone? Please let me know. Her Excellency and I also want to hear your stories of the event. What did you do? How did you stay dry? What did you do to have fun? We want to hear something from you. :-)
I’m hoping Her Excellency will help fill in some of the blanks I’m missing here. :-)
Thank you all for supporting the Barony of Dragon’s Laire!

Baron Arontius added:
And, of course, as I’m making my way through the evening and morning before work, I remember more things done by the Populace. :-)
THL Angharad Albanes is also an integral part of Her Majesty’s staff and was definitely working hard for Her. Not to overlook the fact that she was also in charge of providing the site handout for the weekend. Wrangling that alone required a degree in herding cats. :-)
Dame Gwen, as usual, was generous above and beyond, and provided all kinds of beautiful pottery for the Coronation ceremony. I don’t know how she finds the time to get it all done. Thanks Gwen! :-)
THL Kassandra was also hard at work at gate, directing traffic, Friday afternoon. During that initial bit of chaos that starts every event she helped guide people new to the site in the right direction.
I’m sure I’ll remember more. I hope that if others did things I overlooked that they say something, it is important that those who provided support to the Kingdom and Barony be recognized.

Aaannnndddd, a couple of more popped up just as I hit send: :-)
Monsignor Talentus provided photography for the Coronation and many other ceremonies. I know many of us appreciate that for those moments we missed that he captured.
THL Marcus brought his photography equipment as well to do the same thing, but ended up providing another valuable service, watching children so that others could provide service.
