Tribute
July 5, 2006 Ellen
Also
known in our Society as Genevieve de Bohun, Isolde had been active in Wealdsmere
before she moved to Dragons' Laire and more recently in the Barony of Blatha
an Oir. Her travels around the known world also included a sojourn in Oertha.
While in Dragons' Laire she served as co-autocrat of the second Dragonfest,
(This event has evolved into our Last Chance Tourney.) She actively supported
many activities in the branch from behind the scenes and was well known for her
talents in costuming, fiber arts, cordial and mead making as well as the scribal
arts. She actively worked as a scribe into her final days. Her beautiful
handiwork graces many scrolls, including several left unfinished which have been
turned over to the An Tir Scribes for completion.
Her many contributions were recognized over the years with an Award of Arms AS XXII (1987) The Goutte de Sang AS XXV (1991) and the Jambe de Lion AS XXXVII (2002)
Isolde the Nimble-Fingered/Genevieve de Bohun, passed suddenly
Thursday morning from the effects of Pancreatic cancer. If you knew her, {raise}
a glass, a bottle of something if you wish, a fond memory, and we will share and
remember. She stated that she didn't want a bunch of sad folks crying in theirs,
or their friends, drinks. (I don't think she'll grump too much if some tears are
shed., however) She was a proud, fiercely-independent woman, and a wonderful
scribe, costumer, and so many other things. ...

Morag Nic-Lyon was a member of the order of the Wyvern (inducted June Faire AS XXXV 2000 ) and in past years served the Barony as Gold Key (Jan., '98 - Feb. '00) and Minister of Children (Pages: May '01 - Oct. '01) She was not able to participate much recently because of health issues. She will be greatly missed.
Greetings All,
I was thinking of Morag today and as usual in times such as these wished that
I had found her sooner to speak of these things to her personally. I will
remember her fondly. She was a genuinely nice person and people of that nature
should be remembered, as often as possible.
I remember her best from when I worked for her during the Yule Feast that she
auto-crated. I was her gate person. The thing that struck me the most about her
was her serene confidence in herself and those people about her. She asked the
advice of a lot of people and then implemented all that she thought was good.
Those people who received tasks from her or volunteered to do tasks for her, she
trusted completely and this trust was something that seemed to motivate people
into doing there best for her. If given the chance, the health and the energy I
think that we would all have been amazed at what she could have accomplished.
For her Yule Feast she spent many, many hours at hard and delicate labor
manufacturing beaded site tokens. Some might not think much of them at first
glance, but on closer look I was rather surprised at the work that had to go
into making each one of them. It was just one more indication at the care she
put into the details and her willingness to go the extra distance to create
something that brought joy to those who received it. I think that those tokens
spoke volumes about her. Small but intricate. Something that on the surface may
look simple, but something that required a great of hard work and patience to
accomplish.
I shall never forget her passion to be an artist. She loved to talk about
what she wanted to paint next and all the new things she wanted to try out. Her
passion reflected itself into even her heraldry, Argent on an artist's palette
board, a lion rampant.
I wish I was more skillful with a beautiful eulogy, but I thought it at least
important to make the attempt. May Morag be remembered with joy.
Arontius.
We write to share in the quality memories of a Lady we truly liked!
Morag / Sally. Between Louise and Morag, How could we fail! They would not
have allowed it! Morag's snappy eyes that enjoyed and relished a good chat. From clothing to cloven fruit she held little back, from cast iron cooking
to cast iron wills! Morag gave us good advice and colorful opinions, praise
and encouragement. We met her at our first Last Chance and with wagging
brows she pointed and identified who was who, what was what and that were
going to blend in famously. We are please to have known her! And feel
very............ blended!!!

Although William had not participated in the SCA for some years at the
time of his death, he had been a prime mover in the early days of the Shire of
Dragons' Laire. He was a skilled archer and served as Chief Archer
From 1988 to February of 1991.
Honorable Lady Louise de Lauzon
March 1, 1945 to June
25, 2002
Marianne Grayson
Lost to us in this world but never in our hearts.
The Most Honorable Lady Louise de Lauzon moved onto the great beyond this
day, June 25th AS XXXVII. Her ready smile, joyful laugh
and a helping hand offered to all will be greatly missed. She first
officially served this branch as List mistress for three and a half years
starting in AS XXIX (1994), filling the office of Seneschal from Sept, AS XXXII
(1997) to March AS XXXIV (2000) and acting as Thingmaker's Guildhead during the
same period. Most recently she took on the office of Exchequer in March of
this year. (

Her commitment to service was first publicly recognized at Junefaire AS
XXXI (1996) when she received her Award of Arms. She was admitted to the
order of the Wyvern at Junefaire in AS XXXIII (1998) and honored again with the
Snapdragon in June AS XXXIV (1999). She finally received the Goutte de Sang in
May AS XXXVI (2001). (at left HL Louise enjoys a stroll down merchant
row at JuneFaire 2001)
It is with Heavy Heart that the Barony of Dragons' Laire mourns her loss and
extends its most heartfelt condolences to her lord, Iain Alisdair
MacKenzie and the rest of her family.
| My Lords and Ladies, denizens of Dragon's
Laire and the Kingdom of An Tir. With a heavy heart, and tears in my eyes I pass to you the sad news of the passing of one of our most beloved friends here in DL: Lady Louise de Lauzon passed away this morn. I will let others with steadier hands give more details. Let it be sufficient to say, for now, that my heart is beating fast and the tears have not stopped for the last few hours. She has been a friend and supported me thru some hard times. She has welcomed many newcomers and helped them along on the road to being better informed and behaved citizens of An Tir and Dragon's Laire. She has worked uncounted and unsung hours at Lists, gate, waterbearing, and as our Exchequer. She always had a kind word of encouragement for all, always buffered with some wry comment and great humor. I will miss her kindness, her inspiration and her barbs! Tonight, I shall drink up to her, and send thoughts and prayers to guide wherever she may be going. To Iain, my love, hugs and sympathy. As many others will assuredly offer, I am at disposal for anything needed. Dragon's Laire mourns today. Ceinan of Dragon's Laire |
She will be missed. H.L. Louise was one of
the people that helped Khulan and I get started just 2+ years ago. It
was the connection between Ian and myself at work that got me started in
Archery. He introduced me to this wonderful person at his home when I
went there to see if I could even shoot from a wheelchair. She grabbed
Khulan, then just Kim, and made her feel welcome like family. She made
me my first piece of garb, a renaissance shirt. Then a beautiful wool
hood out of an old navy blanket that I gave her. Yes, she will be
missed. YIS Thorfinn |
| I didn't know the Lady Louise for as long as some
here, nor as well as others, but these words come from my heart also. If
there is anything I can do to assist, either her family or our Baronial
Family, please, just ask me. (with flowing tears, I remain) YIS RagnhildR Torvinn |

| HL Louise and HL Ian ... took us
under wing when we didn't know anyone here. They made us part of their
family.... and Louise introduced me to the wonderful world of JoAnn
fabrics... sewed me up some garb and helped me when I was in tears...
thinking I had ruined the hand sewn wool tunic for m'Lord. She giggled
and pointed out all I needed was a steam iron .... she steamed it out
and made it all better. I will miss her humor and insightful wit .... her caring and gentleness ....so very much. I will also miss seeing her walking toward me in her wide array of straw hats .... I particularly thought the purple one suited her best. She was fighting the wind to keep her hat on at Honey War last weekend ... and miraculously kept winning. :) Her love still warms my heart and always will ! Eileen |
(These excerpts were
delivered in persona from the steppes)
"The evening is warm to the point of being almost
hot. A man with a black hat, sporting a new black feather, one whom has
visited the tavern many times in the past. ... his visage is clouded as
if he has some sad news that he need share. ... He walks up to the bar,
and talks quietly to the bar keeper who points to the table near the
scroll. The man Jean Luc de Brest, a lord by King Brendan, and Queen
Arianna, and master of the Swiftwing, walks over to Aaron of Black
Mountain and converses quietly with him. At which point Aaron nods and
takes out quill and parchment and awaits the rest of the news. |
| In yesterday's mail came a fat yellow
envelope. The printed return address sticker bearing Louise's mundane
name and address. Inside was a collection of photos taken at a Junefaire
up at Frank Raab Park perhaps 10 years ago with a short note offering
them for the website. I was not expecting anything from the Most
Honorable Lady Louise. She may have mentioned in passing that she had
some pictures, as have many others, but I do not recall, yet here they
are, simply and practically offered to use as I see fit. Such was the
nature of her service to all of us, simple, quiet, practical and without
thought of herself.

When I left behind the SCA some time ago, I also left behind those whom I considered teachers, mentors, and friends. Today, I found out that one of those people had passed from this world to the one beyond. HL Louise was one of those people. Many times, she offered advice and assistance while I was Constable, and also as I was going through Sarjent's Trials. Her wisdom was from years of
unwavering service to the Shire, the Barony, and to the Kingdom. Her advice
was sage. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to HL Iain, their family, and to the populace of the Barony of Dragon's Laire for their loss. She was fine lady, and will be truly missed by all who knew her.
Tonight, I shall raise a glass in her memory. HL Eoin Piers |

| I will always remember her wry smile
and her welcoming of anyone to sit by her and share her company. She was
one of the friendliest people I knew in the SCA and I will miss her
deeply.

April 16, 1955 to Sept. 15, 2001.
Duncan MacLachlan, also known as Black Duncan, twice served as an officer of this Barony. Shortly after our elevation he became our waterbearer and served in that position from August AS XXX (1995) to March AS XXXI (1997). In August of that year, he stepped up to fulfill the office of Pages which he held for two years until August AS XXXIV (1999). At Last Chance Tourney AS XXXV (2000) his continued contributions of service to this Barony was recognized with induction into the Order of the Wyvern. A few months before his death he moved to the Shire of Pendale, mundanely located in the state of Idaho. He is greatly missed by his lady pictured here with him at September Crown 2001

As I
prepare to unpack from the event I am drawn to a small book with gold and green
decoration and a simple gold tassel. The book, the one procured for His Grace
Duke Jade, so that he and the fighters he faced Sunday on that field of such
great honor, could inscribe their words of honor to a very special lady.
I
am minded to share the words here, for those who missed the Invocation of the
Lists or who perhaps may have missed the event.
By way
of setting the story let me offer this first - with sad heart I searched for a
way to honor a lady who had touched the lives of so many people and who was not
long for this mortal coil. Having asked Their Majesty's counsel on a suitable
way to honor her They suggested His Grace, as he was fighting the By's for the
tournament. I approached him in his camp after dark to beg this boon.
Without
second thought he asked where she was, how far away she was, and if he could see
her. We traveled the short distance to the hospital where her family and friends
were gathering. I shall never forget this incredibly noble man as he approached
her bedside, took her hand in his and swore to swing his blade in her name upon
An Tir's Honor's field the next day. He made promise to her to fight 100 fights
in her honor. And while the lady could not respond to him or his words I knew in
my heart that she could hear him.
We
returned to the site, a quiet drive, where he apologized for being so quiet. I
didn't know how to respond, still being struck by the noble virtue of this man.
He explained that he was looking within himself, being "thankful" for
this opportunity of reminder about what it was to be a Knight. I didn't know
what to say.
Serena
passed in the early morning hours. When His Grace came to my camp to collect the
book and a favor to wear upon the field I shared the news with him. He steeled
himself to the task at hand.
It will be a long time before any of us gathered up the field forget the emotion or spirit that swept through those gathered as he read these words:
| --- |
| --- |
| --- |
| --- |
| --- |
I
watched throughout the course of the day as His Grace fought each of his fights
for the lady he'd only once met, each time offering silent gesture to the sky
before his blade sang its song. In the evening we met again, to turn over the
book (which shall be given to the lady's family).
I will long remember his joy in reporting that he'd not fought 100 fights
that day but instead nearly 120.
I knew Serena as friend, as a member of my House (the Great Fire Goddess)
and as a member of the September Crown autocrat team (she was instrumental in
the making of the site tokens.) Her loss will be hard felt but her spirit will
live forever in the memory of this most incredible gesture by a very valorous
man.
A final
note I add, an observation made by my lord husband as we prepared for the tasks
at hand Sunday morning; "How much the irony that there could be no fires at
the event where our fire-goddess could not be."
In Loving memory,

Master Colonel Evan Henry Edmund James Graham of Montrose, OP
Feb. 02, 1952 to Sept. 18, 1996
John Attwood
Evan or as he was more commonly known
"The Colonel" departed this world on Sept 18th, 1996 after many years
of service to the known world. His earliest involvement with the dream predate
the formation of both the Kingdom and the Shire of Dragons Laire of which he was
a founding member. Over his SCA career he was heavily involved in the operation
and creation of several ceremonial guard units in service to the Crown or local
Baronial heads, including McFlandry's Guard, Graham's Grays of Montrose and
finally the Sable Scallops of Montrose, Second Regiment. (This unit was being
organized at the time of his death and named themselves in his honor.) These
units also participated in many parades and other celebrations in the modern
community, highlighted by the involvement of the MacFlandry
Guard with the visit
of Queen Elizabeth II to Seattle. (At left twilight procession of
Graham's Grays at 3YC, At Right-on guard at a chilly early morning court at Alpine Pass
War in either 1985 or 1986.)
He received his Award of Arms in June AS
XV (1980) and the Goutte de Sang in May AS XVII (1982). At Twelfth Night
AS XX (1986), he was elevated to the Order of the Pelican. The Barony of
Madrone honored him with the Green Leaf in AS XIX(1985) and the Red Branch in AS
XXI (1986). Twice he was honored with the Forget-Me-Not, first at Twelfth
Night AS XVIII (1984) and again at July Coronation AS XXI (1986).

Wilhelm came to us, as many in this Barony do, courtesy of his Uncle Samuel. His stay was brief and mundane concerns often kept him from participating fully.
