Thrown Weapons Officer: Wade of Dragon's Laire
At Right Eadric winds up for a knife throw.
Live steel weapons are thrown at wooden rounds and straw bales. Expert
instruction is provided for new throwers at all practices. Seasoned throwers can
record scores at all published practices. Check the Flames of the Dragon for practice times and dates.
Thrown Weapons Competitions are held at various events in An Tir during the
Tourney Season. Dragon’s Laire events include June Faire and Last Chance. Our
Thrown Weapons Champion is determined by skills at target scenarios. (For more
on our current Champion check out Our
Champions Corner.)
Scoring in thrown weapons involves 20 knife and 20 axe throws at a wooden round
placed 12 feet from the line. The target face has 3 inch, 8 inch and 16 inch
concentric circles. Three points awarded for cutting the 3 inch circle.
Spear is thrown at a straw bale placed 20 feet from the line. An 8 ½ by 11 inch
piece of cardboard with a 3 inch circle is placed in the upper half of the bale.
Scoring is 3 points for cutting the 3 inch circle, 2 points for cutting the
cardboard and 1 point for hitting the bale. The highest possible score for all
three weapons is 180 points.

| Arion the Wanderer Speaks |
|
I am somewhat of an anachronism in the
SCA. By Gregorian reckoning, I live in the 4th century BC. We don’t
keep track of such things ourselves. Our Druids are more concerned with tracking
the movements of the sun, moon, stars and planets. With this knowledge they can
predict what the gods have in store for us as the wheel of time moves forward.
Far more practical than counting days I think! My interest in throwing ax and knife
comes from a trip I made to Gundestrup. The Northmen taught me to throw well in
only four cycles of the moon. Javelin is something all Celts learn from boyhood.
I just learned it better than most. I know several different styles of throwing ax, knife and javelin. I am happy to share this knowledge. Maybe I can help a lad learn enough to become our next champion. Wouldn’t that be grand? Ed. Note: Arion formerly served as the Baronial Thrown Weapons Officer, Kingdom Thrown Weapons Officer and is currently the Barony's Thrown Weapons Champion for the second time. |
