Device Dragons Laire

Every person and every group has its history. Dragon's Laire is no exception. The following pages are a small attempt to preserve that heritage and make it available to the populace.

A Brief Summary of the Early Days in Dragon's Laire

August, 1981:  Dragon's Laire is started.  (There had been two earlier attempts to form SCA branches in Dragon's Laire by people who were no longer here or involved with the SCA when Dragon's Laire was formed.)  The first meeting was held in THE BOOK STORE in Port Orchard in the summer of 1981.  The meetings were held there for a couple of months until they moved to the Great Northwest Bank Building in downtown Bremerton.

October, 1981:  The Shire's first event, a served feast, was held.

January, 1982:  Dragon's Laire was officially recognized at An Tir's first 12th Night. We were the first shire formed by the new Kingdom of An Tir.

March, 1986:  The Shire produced pages for their section in the An Tir Grete Boke.  Lady Alexis Morgause did the calligraphy, Murakami Tsuruko (now Our Baroness) did the illumination and Malcolm of the Northern Shore did the map of the Shire. (To View our Pages, Click Here)

February, 1987:  The Shire was part of the "local color" for the Golden Hinde's weekend visit to the Port of Bremerton.

At Twelfth Night AS XXIX, The Shire of Dragon's Laire officially petitioned their majesties for elevation to Baronial Status.  The text of the petition contains much of the history of Dragon's Laire. Access it at Petition.

A note on the sources of this history: ( Hey! We're a historical research group! You knew we'd have to identify and quantify our sources) The bulk of the historical notes and highlights presented here were taken from a draft copy of the Official History of the Shire of Dragon's Laire that accompanied our petition for elevation to Baronial Status.  This draft was provided by HL Eric de Dragonslaire, a  leading member of the petition committee. The characterization of these materials as a draft is perhaps misleading as only minor additions and edits were made after this draft was completed. Information from a variety of sources including; officer and autocrat reports, event copy, newsletter articles and the memories of persons who were present, was used to create this history.

As Webminister, I have made some minor edits to the raw material, primarily formatting and organizational changes. Additional material is indicated by parenthesis and italic print or links to its location.  Corrections and additions of all types are welcomed and encouraged.  I am particularly interested in personal stories from members of the populace of the "no s**t, there I was"  and "my mystical experience of the SCA" variety. Photos are always desirable. Editorial services may be provided. (Yes, I'll clean up your spelling.  Also grammar if you wish.)
