Device Dragons Laire         Dragon's Laire Events Time Line

                             1981

October 17 - Feast at Gig Harbor.

Autocrat Lord Kylar Michael. FeastCrat Lady Alexis Morgause.       Dragon's Laire's first event was a served feast on Oct 17, 1981. The event was lightly attended (about 30 people) but was great fun.  We learned one valuable item at this event:  Require advance ticket sales!  We bought for the number of people who said they were coming, not for how many actually did, so there was a lot of food left over.

                               1982

May 21 to 23 - Medieval Faire at Stoke's Auction near Port Orchard.

Autocrat:  Hrolaug Nilsen.  The attendance was light, perhaps 100 moderns, 4 merchants and a couple of dozen SCA folk.  (This was our first JuneFaire)

July 18 to 19 - General Ithra at Olympic College in Bremerton.

Autocrat:  Lady Alexis Morgause.  This was the Shire's first Ithra. Classes included Chivalry & Etiquette, Calligraphy, Armor Construction, Making Gambesons, Tents and Pavilions, Intro to the SCA and several other classes.

July - Skirmish with Blatha An Oir at a Tacoma Park.

August 29 to 31 - War With Wastekeep at Camp Spillman at Belfair State Park.

Autocrat:  Sgt. Hrolaug Nilsen.  This event was successful.  The war  was fought over a banner which Dragon's Laire created but which Wastekeep claimed was due them. King Torgul Bahadur and his squire led the forces of Dragon's Laire. The opposing side was led by Baron Dyon de Mantel with the assistance of a Three Mountains ally, Sir Blackhand. After much fighting and many contests it was decided that  their claim was just.  This was also the occasion of the infamous kissing auction.  A consortium of submarine sailors bought the services of King Torgul (who was King for the first time) then had mercy on him and gave him to the ladies of An Tir to discharge his  duty.  The following weekend during court at September crown, Torgul was presented with a case of cherry flavored chap stick to ease his duty.

                              1983

February 21 to 22 - South Sound Unity Tourney at Evergreen State College in Olympia.

Our autocrat:  Hrolaug Nilsen.  The Shire co-sponsored the South Sound Unity Tourney, along with Madrone, Blatha an Oir, Everclear (now Glymm Mere) and Aquaterra.  The event was held in the covered outdoor sports court at the Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA.  Dragon's Laire sponsored both the open list and the dog-meat tourney. The event was hosted by Glymm Mere.  Duke Torgul won again.  The dog meat tourney was won by Gerald Grimwald.  The prize was a $100 certificate for armor.  His Lordship Charles of Tanglewood was appointed to the Queen's Guard.  Lord Baldwin of Dragon's Laire won the archery tourney.

June 3 to 5 - Medieval Faire at Stoke's Auction Acres in Port Orchard.

Autocrat: Mistress Murakami Tsuruko.  Attendance was light but a good time was had by all.  We only had 4 or 5 fighters so the tourney was run round-robin style to make things last longer.

August 26 to 28 -  Last Chance Tourney at Camp Spillman in Belfair State Park.

Autocrat Sgt. Hrolaug Nilsen.  We called it "Last Chance" because it was your last chance to get that last bit of practice in before September Crown Tourney the following weekend.

                         1984

February 28 to 29 - South Sound Unity Tourney at Evergreen State College.

Autocrat:  St. Hrolaug Nilsen.  The event was hosted by the same groups (see South Sound Tourney - 1983 for list)

June 1 to 3 - Medieval Faire at Frank Raab Park in Poulsbo.

Autocrat:  Sgt. Hrolaug Nilsen. This fair had 5 merchants, 6 fighters, a couple of dozen SCA and around 300 moderns.

August 24 to 26 - Last Chance Tourney at Camp Spillman near Belfair.

Autocrats were Lady Alexis Morgause and Malcolm of the Northern Shore.  The prize for this tourney was a back rub by the ladies of the shire.  The prize was won by the ever stoic Duke Torgul.

                              1985

May 31 to June 2 - June Faire at Frank Raab Park in Poulsbo.

Autocrat:  Lady Alexis Morgause.  Attendance was once more up in all areas.

August 23 to 25 - Last Chance Tourney at Camp Spillman near Belfair.

Autocrat:  Avery Thorson.  The event had some trouble with dirt bikes driving through our campsites.  We tried to find another site to hold the event the following year, but had no luck.

                              1986

July 28 to 31 - South Sound Unity Tourney at Frank Raab Park in Poulsbo.

Autocrat:  Lady Alexis.  Because the event was held in July we did not hold our Faire this year.  As was the tradition, the event was co-sponsored by the Barony of Madrone, the Barony of Blatha An Oir, the Shire of Everclear (now the Barony of Glymm Mere), the Shire of Aquaterra and the new Shire of Silverthorne.

                                 1987

June 3 to 5 - June Faire at Frank Raab Park in Poulsbo.

May 17 to 19 - May Crown at the Mason County Fairgrounds in Shelton.

While sorting my library/office/junkroom in order to pack it to move; I came across an interesting little stack of paper - our bid for May Crown 1991. The total budget was only $2300! (And the bid was finalized with Matt and myself in my living room at o'dark thirty to get it in the mail - using his 'portable' computer. Portable in the sense that it didn't take your *entire* back seat and one person *could* carry it, so long as he wasn't burdened with anything else.)

In the end this was the one and only time we hosted May Crown - it turned out to be murder to turn around and put on the June Faire (which was *much* smaller then) two weeks later.

My favorite memory of the event was being *required* to dance on Saturday night. Mason County could not quite figure out what kind of
permit, if any, we'd need to hold such an event - so they issued us a dance permit, which was posted next to the bardic circle. Mattuesz (no Lord or HL then!) organized dancing on Sat night because "we had to comply with the permit!".

Then there was the 'shire sleepover' - pretty much the whole staff slept (and ate!) in one medium sized building. (A little bigger than the Last Chance fest hall.) The Shire of Shittemwoode fed us and stood watch over the building during the day.

Or the noisy mundanes who were racing trucks up and down a dirt road the circled outside the site fence. When they settled down to party -
concerns were raised about the noise they might make and if would disturb our people. Across the radio came the news "they are partying right across the fence from the Gucci encampment - nobody will even notice them". (I was roving with Col Evan - we were laughing so hard that the end of the camp for which we were responsible was quite incapably guarded for almost ten minutes....)

On the last evening Searjaunt Ralg leg his handpicked cleanup team (I.E. pretty much everyone in the shire) in removing each and every trace that the SCA had been there that weekend. None of us could leave site until he had inspected our assigned area.....

How far we've come.
HL Theodoric. 10/18/05

Autocrat: His Lordship Matush z Plock, Assistants: Lady Ellen Fraser, Her Ladyship Kassandra, and Sgt. Ralg.  Merchantocrat: Lord Eoghan O'Neal.  Eric reservations and on site mapping and building: His Lordship Ian MacInnes.  Location maps & Graphics: Lord Theodoric the Scholar.  Biffyocrat: Her Ladyship Ellen Fraser.  Camping Master: Lord Bernett.  Eric set up and Maintenance: Sgt. Perhaps some day I'll take the time to write the story up with proper embellishments").  Besides the other games, there were more cloven fruit present than people in attendance.
