Baronial Candidates History from draft petition only (mundane information omitted) Information printed here was current at the time of the petition but has not been updated since that time. This information is ONLY on those candidates considered for founding Baron and Baroness.
Set forth as follows is the information that was submitted along with the
petitions for elevation to Barony about each of the candidates and slates:
Lord James Douglass MacDougal and Her Ladyship Maria Isabella de Cordoba
Both James and Maria have been in the SCA for 10 years. They have lived in
Atlantia, East Kingdom, and Drachenwald before settling in An Tir.
First we will deal with Maria.
Her Ladyship Maria Isabella de Cordoba.
Received AoA, AS XXIII in Atlantia.
Awarded the Dragon's Tear for outstanding service as autocrat of Coronet Tourney in
Drachenwald, March 21, AS XXVI.
Awarded the Order of the Panache for excellence in cooking in Drachenwald June 20, AS
XXVII.
Awarded the Jambe de Lion at June Faire in An Tir June 4, AS XXIX.
Held the office of MOAS in Drachenwald in the Shire of Pont Alarch for 3 years.
Prior to that was deputy MOAS in the Barony of Hidden Mountain for 5 years in
Atlantia.
Held the office of MOAS in Dragon's Laire for 1 year.
Next we have James.
Lord James Douglass MacDougal
Received AoA January 25, AS XXV in Drachenwald.
Squired to Viscount Sir Gareth Gordon McGunter in Drachenwald June, AS
XXVII.
Man-at-Arms and protege of Master Baron Artemis de Montessori June 4, AS
XXIX.
Held the office of Exchequer in Drachenwald in the Shire of Pont Alarch for 2 years.
Held the office of Master of Swords in Dragon's Laire for 6 months.
The interests of both James and Maria have been varied. While Lord James began as a heavy fighter, he has
grown to encompass fencing, archery, illumination, some needle arts, dancing, and bardic skills.
Her Ladyship Maria has spent most of her SCA career with a consuming interest in the Arts. This includes
teaching, research, organization, cooking, illumination, dancing, and bardic.
That covers the SCA history of James and Maria. Now James and I will state what we hope to bring to the
office of Baron and Baroness.
We feel that the office of Baron and Baroness is of vital necessity to promoting the deserving people of
Dragon's Laire. We feel that we have learned over the years to be fair, objective, and compassionate towards
others. We want to bring these qualities to the office. We hope that, with proper guidance and understanding,
Dragon's Laire will grow to be one of the outstanding Baronies in An Tir. The people here have the potential, they
just need direction. We would like to provide that direction. We hope to provide leadership by example. We care
deeply about the people of Dragon's Laire and hope that we are able to bring out those aspects of the SCA that we
all strive for: Courtesy, chivalry, and honor. If we are chosen by the populace, we will do our level best to carry
our hopes for bringing to their Majesties all of the good that the people of Dragon's Laire are capable of.

Greetings unto Earl Sir Strider of Duramen & Countess Katheryn d hil Lorriel, Patrons of Dragon's
Laire.
Why should we be Baron and Baroness? The answer to this pointed question is not as straight forward. When Dragon's
Laire decided to become a Barony, we were approached by several members of Dragon's Laire to provide leadership
and guidance. We looked about the land and saw Dragon's Laire as a growing child struggling with adolescence. But
what impressed us more was the potential that lay slightly below the surface. The people of Dragon's Laire work
very hard in providing service to the Society. We have seen their artistry and craftsmanship. Now is the time to
rejoice and sing the praises of these good people.
We are good listeners and can minimize the potential personal conflicts that exist in any group. We know how to
improve communication between people to resolve conflict and get back to having fun. With our backgrounds in the
theater, we can provide the pageantry that Dragon's Laire needs, and everyone can enjoy.
We believe in the very tenets of the SCA, in the virtues of Chivalry and Courtesy, so often lacking in today's
society. Here we found a place where people believe these to be important and strive to practice them. We have a
young daughter in whom we endeavor to instill the very essence of chivalry and courtesy.
We will strive to be good role models and encourage the people of Dragon's Laire to recapture the ambiance of
the
Middle Ages. As the feudalistic heads of the community, we will promote the ideals of Chivalry and Honor, and
recognize those who have gone unnoticed, yet deserving, for not only their service but their talents as well. We
will improve the modern community's awareness of the SCA. We intend to bring Dragon's Laire together under one
banner. We will do this not for personal glory, but for the celebration and the glory of its people.
After much thought about the misery and stress that might befall us, we felt our lives had the stability, the time,
and the funds to fulfill the demands of this role. After ten years as a Navy Family dealing with the stress of long
term separations that submarine service creates, we remain strong in our commitment to each other. Leadership is
not new to us, nor is the paperwork. The hard work is nothing compared to the bright promise the future holds for
Dragon's Laire and its people.
Dragon's Laire, as any group, has its problems, but they are not insurmountable. We desire to bring Dragon's Laire
together as a team, to help people recognize the best in themselves and each other and apply the best in each
individual to benefit the group. We tell you this in complete sincerity that we are team members, we are team
builders, and we are team leaders. We want each and every member to say with pride and honor that they come from
the very best Barony in the Best Kingdom of the known world.
We are not quitters. We know that we can do the Job. We believe Dragon's Laire supports us in this endeavor.
In service of the Kingdom of An Tir and in service of Dragon's Laire your humble servants,
HL Matuesz z Plock

Sergeant Ralg Nilsen
Period resume of Sergeant Hrolaug (called Ralg) Nilsen.
I first attempted to join the SCA in 1975 or 1976 (AS 10), unfortunately my check was never cashed and
I received no newsletters. I attended my first event in the late summer or early fall of 1979 (AS 14). A few weeks
later real life intruded, I decided to build my house. I was unable to get involved until two years later when my
house was done. At that time I heard that there was an effort to get a branch going here in Kitsap County. I
attended the first Dragon's Laire event in October 1981, and have been active ever since.
In 1982 I autocrated Dragon's Laire's first Medieval Faire in May and the War with Wastekeep in August.
In December, 1982, I became shire seneschal, when our founding seneschal was transferred in 1983. I autocrated our
first Last Chance Tourney when it was held in August. I was also on the autocrat team for the first two 'South
Sound Unity Tourneys' (1983 and 1984). In 1984 I autocrated our third fair, which was the first 'June Faire' and
the first at the new site in Poulsbo.
In January of 1986 I stepped down as Seneschal and became the Minister of Sciences, a post I held for only
a few months. Later in 1986 I became Master of Stables for the next two years. In 1989 I became Exchequer for the
shire, a post I held for two years.
In 1989 I also autocrated the first of our new 'Last Chance Tourneys' held in October. I also autocrated
the tenth anniversary 'June Faire' in 1992.
I am currently on the autocrat team for the Thirtieth Anniversary of the SCA to held in An Tir in 1996.
I am also currently spearheading the effort to bring back the 'South Sound Unity Tourney'.
In 1984 I passed my Sergeants exams for Baroness Rowan of Blatha An Oir. One of my brother sergeants and
I then autocrated the exam in 1985. I also autocrated the exam in 1994.
In 1984 I became a Junior Marshall, and in 1989 I became a Senior Marshall. Since then I have been a Crown
field head three times and marshalled Crown final rounds twice. I have been the Marshall in charge of several shire
events.
For the last 12 years I have been opening my work shop for shire members to use. I have no idea of the
amount of armor and number of other items that have been built there over the years.
In the past I was also a coronet herald (the lowest rank) and an apprentice scribe.
Her Ladyship Ellen Fraser
A Brief History of Ellen Fraser
I first became aware of the Society for Creative Anachronism in about 1974 when my brother joined the SCA in
Michigan. I attended my first Tournament, Serjeants Trials in Madrone in 1978. Since I was living in Wenatchee at
the time and there was no group branch to join, I had to put my interest on hold. Sometime around 1981, I moved
to Bellingham and became involved with the Shire of Shittemwoode. In 1988, I married Sgt. Ralg and moved to
Dragon's Laire. Between the two shires, I have autocrated or co-autocrated 5 events, held the offices of Master
of Stables, Exchequer, Lists, Deputy Seneschal. I have also held the office of the Northwestern Regional Arts and
Sciences Deputy (when the region was divided into Northern and Western, I kept the Western Region) for a little
bit more than two years. For the past year I have been the Kingdom Arts and Sciences Officer. I have taught classes
in: Knitting, Tatting, Bobbin Lace, Sewing, Cooking, Costuming, and Hair Dressing.
To Earl Sir Strider and Countess Katheryn,
Greetings and best wishes from HLS Ellen Fraser and Sergeant Hrolaug (Ralg)
Nilsen.
When Dragon's Laire decided to re-select prospective couples, we thought it was a very good idea. It gave
us a chance to re-evaluate our reasons for allowing our name to be submitted and to discuss the changes and effects
it would have on our lives. We were initially reluctant, and to some extent, we still are. Our marriage is far more
important than anything Ralg Nilsen and Ellen Fraser might do. There were also other things that we also needed
to take into consideration. We both have the responsibility of full-time jobs. We also felt we would be less than
honest if we did not included the effect Ellen's Fibromyalgia (FMS) has on our lives, currently, with intensive
management, the effect is minimal. Another consideration is Amateur Radio. We are both members of the Amateur Radio
Emergency Services (ARES and RACES) and from time to time we have training sessions or real emergencies that must
be attended.
As Cornet, some of our goals would be to establish such traditions in the new Barony as will benefit the
Barony in the future. Among them is the founding and the formation of the Sargentry of Dragon's
Laire, including
an Arts and Sciences Sergeant. Other traditions under consideration are in lieu of a retinue - a rotating system
of caretakers for the Coronet, at Dragon's Laire feasts the head table would be served last, and a system where
by the populous support of the Coronet is reaffirmed.
The people in Dragon's Laire are very vibrant and creative individuals, and as such can be passionate about
their ideas and interests. The people here need both the freedom to follow their interests and the structure that
allows everyone to enjoy the SCA. We believe that we can give the populous these things. To rule best here is to
rule gently - with example and with tolerance. We see this as one of the real difficulties for the Coronet, how
to give people both freedom and structure. While we have a general tendency to favor freedom over structure, we
think we can fulfill this requirement.
We know that in large groups, it is only natural for smaller groups to evolve. We do not see the formation
of households or other groups of individuals with common interests as a problem, as long as their greater identity
is with Dragon's Laire. We see this as similar to large farmsteads or villages that would have made up a Barony
in period.
As Baron, Ralg would bring a sense of history and balance. He is a founding member and has seen the shire
grow, have troubled times, outlast those troubles and continue to grow. As Baroness, Ellen would bring experience
in other branches in the Kingdom, and her experience as an officer in a Shire, Regional, and Kingdom level.
We wish to add this last thought, we neither "want" nor "need" to be the Coronet of Dragon's
Laire.
However, we are willing to serve as such, if it is decided that it is in the best interests of Dragon's
Laire. We
are happy with what we are doing and being who we are. If Ellen was neither a Kingdom Officer nor Baroness and Ralg
just a stick-jock, we would still be happy. We have enough interests and friends in the SCA to keep us very busy
for a long, long time.
Respectfully yours,
Sgt. Hrolaug Nilsen HL Ellen Fraser

Greetings to the Populace of Dragon's Laire,
We, Sargent Hrolaug (called Ralg) Nilsen and Murakami Tsuruko Sensei give you our qualifications and
thoughts on being the Founding Coronet of Dragons' Laire.
We have the appeal of being two of the most senior active members of the Shire. Ralg has been in the SCA
for 15 years and is a founding member of the Branch. Tsuruko is a "second wave" member of Dragons' Laire and has
been in the SCA for 16 years. We have seen the shire start, grow, have troubled times, outlast the troubles and
continue to grow. This experience will give us valuable insight as founding Baron and Baroness.
Between the two of us we have experienced nearly every office the Shire has. In addition Ralg is currently
a Sargent to a neighboring Barony and Tsuruko has been both a Kingdom Officer (Vox Leonis Herald) and a staff
member to Black Lion Herald. Before receiving her Laurel, Tsuruko was squire to Syr Garan Darkwolf for ten years.
Our experience in these various positions has developed our people, communication and reporting skills. We have
a network of friends from all three peerage orders, many Royal Peers, and many past and present Baronial Coronets.
Tsuruko also draws upon her experience as a renowned costumer (winning at regional, national, and
international competitions) to bring the needed presence and showmanship to the Coronet.
We have talked long with each other and our respective spouses about the Baronial Coronet and the effects
that it would have on our lives. Our spouses approve and support our effort in this. We have known each other
for 12 years and have worked together on many projects. We feel that we can work together for the good of the
branch and the Kingdom as the Coronet. We are a local call to each other; we also communicate electronically, have
camped together for years, and visit each other frequently.
Among Ralg's goals are assisting the Baroness with the founding and development of the Sargentry of
Dragons' Laire. Tsuruko's past experience as a squire will give her a unique perspective as Baroness when working
on this task. Other ideas include serving the head table last at served feasts, a rotating system of caretakers
for the Baron and Baroness (thus requiring no retinue or clique), and a system where by the support of the populace
to the Coronet is reaffirmed. Additionally, Tsuruko would like to encourage participation in the Arts and
Sciences and specially recognize hard workers in the group.
We will do the best job possible for the branch, but we realize that the
S.C.A. is only a game. Many
things are more important such as our respective marriages and our jobs.
An i mportant part of Ralg's life is Amateur Radio. He is a member of the Amateur Radio Emergency Services
(ARES and RACES) and from time to time will have training sessions or real emergencies that he must attend.

and watched the event more than triple during that time. I have fought light infantry or marshalled in a large
number of wars (a knee injury prevents me from fighting as a heavy). I served on the committee reviewing standards
for light fighters. I am a junior heavy marshal, a senior light marshal and a senior archery marshal. I have
marshalled some rapier combat, including being MIC at a Cavalier-Lights War. I am a warranted constable-at-large
and have worked my share of hours at the gate. I have entered competitions in

A.S. XXVIII and A.S. XXIX. I won the Norse Heroic Poetry Competitions at Egil's in
A.S. XXVII and A.S. XXIX. In A.S. XXVII and A.S. XXVIII I served as a judge at the Celtic Bardic Competition.

AS XXIX
Greetings to the Populace of Dragon's Laire,
We, HL Eric de Dragonslaire and Murakami Tsuruko Sensei, wish to serve Dragon's
Laire, An Tir and the Crown
by becoming the first Baron and Baroness of Dragon's Laire. We will work as the representatives of the Crown to
see that there is greater growth and prosperity in the branch for the benefit of the people of the branch, the
Kingdom and the Society and at the same time insure that everyone has fun.
Eric became a member of Dragon's Laire and the SCA six years ago. His background as Kingdom Seneschal
and as an attorney have developed his skills with people, organization and written and verbal communication.
Tsuruko has been in the Society for 16 years and part of Dragon's Laire for 12 years. She knows the
strengths and weaknesses of the group. She has held a variety of offices in the shire over the years and helped
hold the group together during a low ebb. She served as Kingdom Vox Leonis Herald and, before receiving her
Laurel, was squire for 10 years to Syr Garan Darkwolf. She is skilled at dealing with people, organization,
written and verbal communication, and reporting. Her modern employment, including her present job as a technical
editor for ship's manuals, has cultivated these same skills.
We are familiar with how many baronies work. As Kingdom Seneschal Eric has attended events in 9 out of
10 An Tirian baronies and has attended more baronial events in our neighboring baronies than many of the people
who live in those baronies. For years he has read all of the baronial newsletters and reports. Years ago Tsuruko
lived in Madrone. She is a founding member of the Shire (now Barony) of Darkwater in Trimaris and has traveled
widely in An Tir and other kingdoms.
After long discussions that have included our significant others we feel that we can work effectively
together for the good of the branch. Our significant others approve and support this decision.
We feel that our political alliance is an advantage, particularly in light of the statistics on job related
relationship failures. Living in separate households will allow us some cooling down space if necessary and an
opportunity to gain perspective on a problem before discussing it further.
Between the two of us we have a broad range of experience. Where we don't have direct experience we have
a network of friends and acquaintances, including peers and royal peers, that we can look to for advice and
support.
We have participated in many courts. As a bard and former Vox Leonis we are comfortable being center
stage. Our stage experience can bring drama and showmanship to the position when appropriate.
We wish to create a solid foundation for those who would come after us as Baron and Baroness. We intend
to create customs and traditions that are unique to Dragon's Laire and are assets to the Kingdom. We envision a
comprehensive award structure that will not only show people that what they have done is appreciated, but will
encourage them to go beyond their current levels.
