It's time to show off everything that makes the SCA worthwhile

About June Faire

Their Excellencies Cedric and Brighid  invite you to join with their populace as the Barony of Dragon's Laire celebrates its 26th annual June Faire for a full weekend of festivities. Experience feats of armored combat, the finesse of rapier, high flying missiles, the skillful displays of artisans and the beauty of the bardic arts, as well as some of the finest, handpicked merchants in the known world. This is our annual Demo for the public, please show off your best for the moderns who attend. As such, a companion web site for June Faire can be found at www.medievalfaire.org, focused towards informing the modern attendees about demonstration activities. Information found on this site will match that on the Medieval Faire site.

The Faire is moving this year to a beautiful, newly developed yet, primitive site within the Port Gamble community just a few minutes on foot, from town and amenities. The site is without power or water and we encourage you to prepare for all possibilities.

Arts and Sciences Activities

Welcome to the Arts & Sciences Courtyard!

Come see the arts and sciences of the Middle Ages in the Arts and Sciences Village!  How did people get things if they couldn’t drive to the store and buy them?  Imagine life before Walmart, Costco, and Home Depot.  Imagine life before electricity and batteries.

Come look inside a medieval pavilion.  See how a traveling Norseman lived and how he navigated his journey.  Watch a blacksmith demonstrating metal working techniques at his fiery forge.  Watch the shoemaker making custom fitted shoes by hand.

Come find out how much skill and work is needed to get clothing from a sheep. Shearing,  cleaning, spinning, weaving, knitting, nalbinding, tailoring, and more.  What were clothes like before elastic and zippers?

Watch scribal artisans illuminate beautiful scrolls.  Come to the scribal table and try calligraphy and illumination (scroll painting) yourself.

The Bardic Stage is located in the A&S Village, so come sit on a hay bale and rest while enjoying live performances.

We’ll be baking bread, cooking chicken, and making more unusual medieval treats.  Come find out if King Henry the VIII ate tomatoes, potatoes, and peanuts.  Come find out what Norsemen and Vikings ate in the Dark Ages.

Medieval Cooking

Medieval food wasn't all gruel and turnips! Get a glimpse into Medieval Cuisine at our demonstration kitchen where we tackle actual recipes from the days of yore. Catch the aroma of roasting fruits and meats, fresh baked bread, fried delicacies and pottages. Maybe even a turnip or two.

Wood and Metalworking

Woodworking covers a broad spectrum from weaponry to household uses to defensive forts. The common woodworker would be a skilled craftsman with the ability to make wooden barrels, arrows, weaponry, axe handles, arrow shafts, bows, crossbows, spears, lances, shields, tent poles and necessary building fortifications.

On the home front, woodworkers would create beds tables chairs, eating utensils and plates. All items were hand crafted out of necessity, and each piece possessed the characteristics and traits of their cultures and the artisans who created them.

Steelworkers or blade smiths produced knives and axes and weapons necessary for defense of household and property, or upon orders of their leige to create weapons for warfare.

Ironworkers made hinges, belt buckles, pots and pans, iron fitting for the house or fortress, gates and so forth. They were also farriers, who would put the steel or iron horseshoes to the animal.

Woodworkers and metalworkers will be demonstrating their crafts at our faire. Stop by, and learn what was involved in the process of working their trades.

Illumination

We in the scribal arts have barely scratched the surface of all the archaic wisdom to be learned from the past.

Texts from the middle ages could not be mass produced. Each page was hand scribed, and often ornamented with intricate illumination.

Primarily illumination was accomplished by Christian or Catholic monks who dedicated their lives to the scribal arts. The transcription of the Latin language into God's word.

The science portion of scribal arts bordered on alchemy because of the need for grinding various earths with mortar and pestle. Studies of plant dyes, uses of paper and parchment materials, depositing or making gold and silver leafing, and the illustrations were in general completed at the request of the buyer of the book and served two purposes; they told a story as well as the text and decorated the book.

You might say that the illustrations of the era were like comic books to the medieval people, to allow those who could not read Latin to understand and appreciate the work.

Another facet could be considered the symbolism of the era, which could be heraldry or creatures grotesque or real in nature.

We invite you to investigate and satisfy your curiosity. Come and play!

Clothing

Clothing was an indicator of social status and wealth. It demonstrated the differences between nobility and commoners, and helped to define one’s place within the social hierarchy. At our faire, you will be able to see examples of garb from a cross section cultures, which may include Russian, Viking, Teutonic or Germanic, Japanese, Mongol, and points in between. This is not fantasy, this is a historical representation of clothing and materials used in the past.

As part of our demonstration, we will have medievally clothed dolls portraying various cultures. Demonstrations on drop spinning, period textiles and techniques for creating garb in different parts of the world.

Please come visit us, and learn more about the tapestry of medieval life.
