| Food on hand- some thoughts and notes. The realities of living in An Tir mean that we generally have 2 seasons, Feast and Tourney, and the Barony is usually only buying food in the feast season. Feast-o-crats should strive to only buy enough supplies for their feast or event. While it might seem sensible to buy items like flour, sugar, spices and other items in bulk to reduce costs, if they haven't been used by Candlemas they will be sitting in storage until Oct. Do you really want to make cookies out of flour that has been stored in an outdoor shed for a year? Spices can hang around even longer- not every feast menu will need caraway seeds or ground cumin. And that industrial size is less than a bargain if most of it is tossed out because no one can remember when it was purchased. So what should be done with excess food supplies? If it is perishable, give it away! (or sometimes people can be induced to make a contribution to defray costs) At an overnight event, excess food and even leftovers can be converted into breakfast or midnight snacks. Unopened canned or dry goods could be donated to a food bank or sold to the populace. Find out who the feast-o-crat for the next local event will be and offer them items that can be easily and safely stored. Coffee supplies: We have lots!! Please use them up!! before buying more!!! |
